Why the Yelp–ChatGPT Deal Means Your Yelp Profile Just Got a Lot More Important

Yelp is now feeding reviews and photos into ChatGPT

On July 23rd, Yelp announced it's licensing its reviews, ratings, and photos to OpenAI. ChatGPT can now pull that content directly into answers for local queries, complete with Yelp branding and links, and Yelp's “Request a Quote” feature is coming to ChatGPT next, letting users contact a business for a quote without ever leaving the chat window.

I talk with local business owners about online visibility every week, and this is one of those announcements that sounds like industry news but actually changes what I'm telling clients to do. Here's my honest take, and what I think it means for your business.

Google Reviews Used to Be the Whole Conversation. Not Anymore.

For years, when a client asked me about online reputation, the conversation started and ended with Google reviews. Yelp was an afterthought, something we'd mention or help clean up but never really prioritize. Google Business Profile carried the weight for local SMBs, and Yelp's rocky, well-documented history with Google (Yelp is currently suing Google, alleging the company favored its own local results) made Yelp feel like a secondary channel at best.

That calculus just changed. If ChatGPT is going to lean on Yelp's data to answer local questions, Yelp isn't an afterthought anymore. It's a lever. Local search has genuinely been a weak spot for ChatGPT, with a track record of inventing restaurants, getting hours wrong, and other errors that come from not having reliable, real-time local data. Yelp is a direct fix for that gap, which is exactly why OpenAI wanted this deal.

What I'm Actually Telling Clients to Do This Week

Treat your Yelp profile like your Google Business Profile. Updated, complete, accurate, and actively managed. You don't need to pay for Yelp's premium placement to benefit here. You need your basic information to be right and your review count to be healthy.

Start asking for Yelp reviews, not just Google reviews. If your business has 400 Google reviews and five on Yelp, that's a gap worth closing. To be clear: asking for a review is fine. Incentivizing one with a discount or a freebie is not, and Yelp enforces that line hard. The businesses that get ahead here are the ones who simply ask, consistently, as part of how they already ask for Google reviews.

Respond to your Yelp reviews. This is the one most businesses skip. I've watched clients get much better about responding to Google reviews over the past couple of years, but their Yelp reviews often just sit there unanswered. If reviews are about to carry more weight in how ChatGPT represents a business, an unanswered one-star review sitting out there for two years is a bigger problem than it used to be.

What About the “Attribution Gap”?

Here's a fair question: if someone can ask ChatGPT a question, get a quote, and book a service without ever touching your website, doesn't that break your ability to measure what's working?

I don't think it's the crisis it sounds like. We're already seeing this pattern in Google Search, where plenty of searches resolve without a click-through, and honestly, if your business is getting the lead, the lead matters more than the click. What does matter is managing expectations up front, both for yourself and for anyone on your team who reports on marketing performance, so nobody's caught off guard when the analytics don't tell the full story.

Am I Fully Bought In? Not Blindly.

Yelp has run this play before. It licensed content to Google, and that relationship soured into years of conflict. Publishers were told a similar story with Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, and a lot of them never saw the traffic they were promised. Whether OpenAI plays this differently is genuinely unproven.

So I'm not telling clients to overhaul their entire marketing strategy overnight. I'm telling them to close an obvious, low-cost gap now, while it's cheap and easy to do, and let the data over the next few months tell us how much weight ChatGPT is really putting on Yelp signals.

The Bottom Line

If you're a local business and you've been ignoring Yelp because Google always mattered more, that assumption just got shakier. Go look at your Yelp listing today. Check what your competitors are doing there. Close the gap. It's a small lift for what could be a meaningful new visibility channel, and I'd rather my clients be ready early than scrambling once everyone else catches on.

While investing in a reliable agency to handle your SEO should be a priority for any business, finding the right agency can be a bit of a minefield. There are hundreds of companies out there who claim to be the best in the business. In addition, each company has a different way of doing things, and not all SEO companies do it the same way. Given the importance of SEO in the online business field, you can’t afford to hire just anyone. And making the wrong decision can lead to long-term damage to your reputation and profits.
